The structures team focuses on the structural components for our solid-motored rocket. We ensure that the launch vehicle is safe and ensure that it will retain its structural integrity throughout the duration of its flight.
The team often employs SolidWorks to create 3D models of the rocket components and run stress analysis on the critical parts of the rocket. Additionally, software such as OpenRocket is utilized to run simulations of the launch conditions expected during flight. For two years we have been perfecting our process for developing fiber glass nose cones and gaining experience with utilizing composite materials. We hope to expand our experience working with molding our nose cones to molding fiberglass body tubes and eventually working with carbon fiber. The team is mostly design driven, however occasionally research into ideal airframe and component design is conducted to improve our designs. Research often involves reviewing textbook material and reading through amateur rocketry journals.
