Good afternoon Highlanders!,
Thank you all for coming to our first general meeting! However, that was just the tip of the iceberg. With so many exciting events and updates coming up, we have just begun our Aerospace Systems journey. For our second general meeting, we will be going over our lab procedures. As the year moves along, we must prepare our members for possibly working at our laboratory at Flabob Airport. In addition to lab procedures, we will be updating our members on the BCOE Match Challenge donations. There are a lot of updates coming your way so don't forget to follow all of our social medias and stay updated with this website! Congratulations and best of luck to all of them in the upcoming school year! Projects AND LAB UPDATES
MICRO-GA shoutout to Micro-G with some word from our current lead Ethan Shoulson:
Micro-G designed a fiberglass boat with autonomous controls to deliver emergency supplies to a stranded astronaut following an emergency launch abortion over water. They submitted a proposal detailing this design to NASA and were selected as one of four teams to compete in that challenge and one of 28 teams overall. They were unfortunately unable to complete the construction of the vessel but they did complete the initial mold used to shape the fiberglass into the proper shape. We hope that they will be able to submit the proposal again for the 2021 challenge season and will again be selected! Avionics:
Avionics has been performing tests on the rocket Prometheus' recovery stages. We're ensuring that the rocket's parachutes will deploy correctly and bring it back down to the ground safely. There are a lot of variables to consider when using explosive separations, and the recovery of the rocket is critical to the project's success. We'll conduct as many tests as required to make sure it goes off without a hitch. Micro-G: Micro-G has been hard at work on creating the foam mold for the fiberglass hull of their autonomous boat for NASA. They have also been diligently designing the control system for that boat so that it can reach an astronaut in need. Payload: The Pollution Gradient Team is planning to have a workday in the near future to test out the gas sensors and telemetry system. The Sonic Bloom team is delving into conceptual designs for seed bombing. So far, we would like to get hands on and create biodegradable casings for the seeds. Propulsion: The Propulsion team is currently working on creating the engine assembly on Solidworks. More specifically, we are making sure our fuel/oxidizer manifold fits properly with our injector and making sure the injector fits properly into the engine housing, which will hold our thrust chamber and nozzle components. Also, we are looking to purchase our fuel and oxidizer tanks in order to begin assembling our plumbing system. Structures: The Structures team has been hard at work designing and manufacturing components of the Prometheus (Solid Motor) Rocket that will be competing in the Spaceport America Cup this summer. The Structures team recently finished designing the fiberglass nosecone. The Structures team has also been actively working with SolidWorks and other rocket launch simulation software to 3-D CAD a virtual model of the rocket.
Our organization has been active lately, but it's time shift more of our focus to school. The end of quarter is drawing as well as finals. Our members now take more time to study, but let's talk the last bit of our work before we go. Our members formed three teams to compete in the dodgeball tournament hosted by a fellow engineering club, BMES. This evening was a nice way to destress and have fun with our members. One of our teams placed second overall. The fast approach of spring brings elections to welcome a new executive board. We completed nominations and now move on to interviews for key positions. These positions include president, chief engineer, and propulsion lead. We will conduct speeches immediately after spring break. We can't wait to form our new team. We wish everyone to perform their best this finals week. Good luck!
